NPA rebel killed in clash in Camarines Sur town

LEGAZPI CITY, March 15 (PNA) -- A suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebel was killed in an encounter with government troops in Barangay Itok, Capalonga, Camarines Norte Wednesday morning, an Army official said.

Brig. Gen. Roland Manalo, 902nd Brigade commander, said a squad from the 9th Infantry Batallion led by SSgt. Hernandez figured in a five-minute firefight with around five communist rebels in Sitio Public, Barangay Itok at 5:30 a.m.

He said one of the rebels, who has yet to be identified, was killed while an M-16 rifle with three short magazines and a backpack were recovered at the encounter site.

Manalo said the rebels immediately fled towards the neighboring Barangay Lukbanan, Capalonga.

Maj. Gen. Manolo Orense, commanding general of the 9th Infantry Division based in Camp Elias in Pili, Camarines Sur, has ordered continuous combat operation against the fleeing rebels.

Meanwhile, Army authorities have identified the NPA rebel who was killed on Sunday in an encounter with government troops in Barangay Pinamihagan, Lagonoy, Camarines Sur.

The slain insurgent was identified as Arden Drice Napili alias "Nick,” a resident of Barangay Sisigon in Matnog, Sorsogon, whose body was claimed by his mother.

On Sunday at 12:11 p.m., the troops from the 83rd Infantry Batallion clashed with around 30 NPA rebels in Barangay Pinamihagan.

Recovered from the communist guerillas were an M-60 machine gun, three M-16 rifles and an M-14 rifle, improvised explosives, grenades and communist propaganda materials. (PNA) LAP/GVR/AT/CBD
