LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 2 (PNA)—The City Veterinary Office (CVO) here met with all the meat vendors in this city Thursday to orient them on the city government’s requirements before one could have his animal slaughtered at the “Double AA” abattoir which is expected to be operational anytime soon.
Mayor Noel E. Rosal said the civil works of the project is 95 percent complete and it is just a matter of time before the new facility will be serviceable.
The city government has allotted PHP17 million for the civil works while the Department of Agriculture poured PHP5 million as counterpart fund to have it completed.
Two resolutions adopted by the City Legislative Council during two regular sessions in January and February last year supported the construction of the facility.
One of the resolutions allowed the bidding process for the meat inspection improvement program of Legazpi while another asked the mayor to create a Special Implementing Unit (SIU) to implement such program.
Once completed, the slaughterhouse will serve neighboring municipalities and cities including big commercial establishments and mall chains now operating in the city.
Rosal said CVO, who will handle the operations of the abattoir, will ensure that all the butchers and other personnel of the new facility will undergo training at the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority and National Meat Inspection Services to ensure the slaughtered animals will be safe for the consuming public.
The project, which will have a water treatment facility for proper disposal of waste materials, is expected to generate some PHP10 million annually. (PNA) FPV/GVR/EPS/CBD
