LEGAZPI CITY, Dec. 26 (PNA) -- The Department of Health (DoH) in Bicol has prepared all medical commodities for distribution to different municipalities and cities across the region as Typhoon "Nina" intensifies and increases its threat to the Bicol region.
This as evacuation of over a million persons living in flood, landslide and storm surge prone areas in Albay have been stepped up by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) today.
PDRRMC data showed as of 12 noon Sunday there were 12,855 families or 64,276 persons who have initially moved out to designated evacuation shelters.
Dr. Napoleon Arevalo, DOH-Bicol director, has warned the public to boil drinking water to avoid water borne diseases due to water contamination.
“Our personnel and supply of medicines are ready,” he said.
Arevalo said during emergencies, DOH-5 along with local government units in the Bicol region are strictly monitoring the health situation to prevent any outbreak.
“The most common health concerns during an emergency are water borne diseases and gastro-intestinal problems,” he said.
Arevalo said diarrhea is the usual problem, especially in evacuation centers, so DOH strongly recommends to residents to boil their drinking water.
He has advised the public to observe proper hygiene to avoid possible infections.
Dr. Nathaniel Rempillo, provincial health officer of Albay, said provincial health personnel have been deployed to different stations to assist municipal health units in giving medical services to various evacuation centers.
He said all humanitarian personnel will report 24/7.
“It is our policy to make all personnel available and accessible to affected families in times of emergency,” said Arevalo.
Meanwhile, Dr. Cedric Daep, executive director of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Albay, said residents in areas prone to floods, lahar, landslide and storm surge must “evacuate without delay.”
He said the PDRRMC is closely monitoring all towns and cities in Albay and is ordering the strict compliance to advisories on mandatory evacuations. (PNA) JBP/GVR/MDR/CBD
