LEGAZPI CITY, Oct. 10 (PNA) -- The president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in Bicol died on the spot after a lone gunman riddled his body with bullets, said a report that reached the regional police office Monday.
ABC-Bicol president, Joel O. Briones, 47, was shot eight times in different parts of the body as he was sitting in front of a sari-sari store after attending a barangay assembly in Barangay Tinagonan, Donsol in Sorsogon province at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, said regional police spokesperson, Sr. Insp. Malou Calubaquib.
Recovered from the crime scene were eight empty shells of a .45-caliber pistol.
Calubaquib said the alleged gunman, identified as Edgar Magtibay alias Edgar Garcia, 48, is a notorious drug personality in their village who earlier surrendered under the police’s Oplan Tokhang. He fled the scene of the crime.
Sr. Insp. Joel Trinanes, acting chief of the Donsol Police, said revenge could be the motive for the killing due to Briones’ active role in the anti-illegal drug campaign.
Trinanes said the suspect probably believes that Briones tipped off his name to police officers as one of the drug personalities in their village.
Last July, Briones represented ABC-Bicol in signing an agreement with regional police director, Chief Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe, to support the Philippine National Police’s campaign to eradicate the drug menace in the region. (PNA) CVL/GVR/JH/EDS
