Bicol police list 351 public officials, majority them village officials, among drug surrenderees

LEGAZPI CITY, Oct. 25 (PNA) -- Some 351 public officials in the Bicol region, mostly barangay (village) officials, suspected of being drug personalities have surrendered to authorities from July 1 to October 21.

“We expect an increase in the number of these public officials who will surrender as Operations Tokhang and Double Barrel of the Philippine National Police continue,” director of the Bicol Regional Police, Chief Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe, has said.

Buenafe said the 351 is broken down into 346 village officials and five city and municipal councilors.

Of the 346 village officials, 47 were chairmen, 202 were councilmen, 76 were watchmen, seven were treasurers, seven were secretaries, four were chief watchmen, two were staff members and one was a justice committee head.

Buenafe said of the five city and municipal councilors, two were from Albay and one each from Camarines Sur, Catanduanes and Masbate.

Aside from the 351 public officials, police also have in their list 54 other drug personalities who are in government service or are public servants, he added.

“The 54 include 34 government employees, 13 public school teachers, one principal, two policemen, two firemen, one member of the Cafgu (Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit) and one member of the Philippine Army,” he said. (PNA) CVL/GVR/JH/EDS
