By Mike de la Rama

LEGAZPI CITY, June 23 (PNA) –- Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Bicol Regional Director Joy Blanco has urged local leaders and entrepreneurs to make new products using science and technology (S&T).

“Support from local leaders is very important to address the building of S&T-based knowledge in the region to enhance national competitiveness, particularly outside the Philippines,” she said.

In the Bicol Region, according to her, entrepreneurship will lead to poverty reduction, but, there must be an intervention from national and local governments in order to capacitate local entrepreneurs and think for global competitiveness.

The DTI, Blanco said, is offering different programs to small and medium business enterprise in order to develop their products and make more production whether for domestic and foreign markets.

“Our challenge to local entrepreneurs is to make their business grow, empowered, competitive and creative,” she said.

The DTI official explained that creativity is development and utilizing science and technology to help boost one's production and aspire for ambitious innovations.

She also said that the application of advances in technology, in conjunction with entrepreneurship and innovative approaches to the creation and delivery of goods and services, translates scientific and technological advances into more productive economic activity.

“This results in economic growth in the Bicol Region, for instance, if market structures and the regulatory environment will enable the more productive activities to expand,” Blanco said.

The DTI provides support to local business groups or individual training and skills development and information session like trade promotion to learn how to get started in exporting or increasing sales to global markets.

It guides government trade promotion and business development officers, Philippine exporters, and prospective be exporters in finding the right market for their product and services identified in the Philippine Export Development Plan.
