Camarines Sur cops nab man using cyanide in fishing

LEGAZPI CITY, June 6 (PNA) -- Members of the Bantay Dagat of the local government unit of Caramoan town arrested a 24-year-old man while fishing using cyanide in the sea off Barangay Oring, Caramoan, Camarines Sur at about 10 a.m. Saturday.

A police report said Joemar A. Plopenio, a resident of the village, had been under surveillance for several days before his apprehension as a result of a tip from local residents that the suspect has been engaged in illegal fishing using cyanide.

The report said that during the operation of the volunteer group headed by Edmundo P. Rita, its members caught Plopenio in the act of possessing a bottle of gin with blasting cap and containing sodium cyanide, popularly known locally as "bigas-bigas."

Plopenio is now under the custody of the Caramoan Municipal Police Station, which is now preparing to file a case of violation of Republic Act 8550 against him. (PNA) FFC/FGS/JH/CBD
