LEGAZPI CITY, May 3 (PNA) -- More than 3,000 farmers and fishermen are participating in the 14th annual Albay agri fiesta being held now in the Albay Astrodome and which opened Monday with the theme “Grow Local, Eat Local, and Buy Local".
The opening activities were led by Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo and Board Member Ramon Alsua, chair of the committee on agriculture of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Albay, who represented Governor Joey Sarte Salceda.
The celebration aims to increase the income of the farmers and fishermen in the province.
Cheryll Rebeta, Provincial Agricultural Services Office head, said the yearly celebration is part of the recognition of the local government of the contribution of the farmers and fishermen to the economy of Albay.
Rebeta said the farmers are now showcasing their products at the Astrodome and undergoing a series of training and seminar-workshop.
The agri festival also aims to give importance and support to local products.
Romulo thanked and lauded Salceda for giving priority and continuous support to the agricultural sector of the province.
Albay posted a 93.7-percent rice sufficiency record, the highest among the six provinces of the region, while its rice production showed 50-percent increase in the past seven years. (PNA) LAP/FGS/NIM/CBD
