DepEd allots Php600,000 cash incentives for PWD athletes

LEGAZPI CITY, April 16 (PNA) -- For the first time, the Department of Education (DepEd) has allocated cash incentives for special student athletes playing for Para Games or games for persons with disabilities (PWDs), DepEd deputy secretary general Cesar S. Abalon said Saturday.

“This is the first time that DepEd is giving cash incentives to student athletes belonging to SPED or PWDs. It will be giving similar cash incentives to winning regular student athletes,” Abalon said.

The cash incentives to be given by the education agency are Php3,000 for gold, Php2,000 for silver and Php1,000 for bronze.

Out of 18,000 delegates from 18 regions, 684 are PWDs.

Abalon said that 10 years after the inception of Para Games in the Palarong Pambansa, more games for PWD-participants will be included in the annual Palarong Pambansa following strong clamor from stakeholders and as provided under Republic Act No. 10588 entitled "An Act Institutionalizing the Conduct of the Palarong Pambansa and Appropriating Funds Therefor", otherwise known as the “Palarong Pambansa Act”.

The law aims at institutionalizing the Palarong Pambansa as the premier national sporting event of the country under the DepEd as a venue for talent identification, selection and recruitment of student athletes.

It also seeks to improve the DepEd’s national school sports program and give more prestige to the annual sports event by encouraging better participation of schools through incentives and rewards.

The law also provides that appropriate sports events shall be organized for students with disability.

The enacted law also encourages local government units (LGUs) to take a proactive role in the promotion of the Palarong Pambansa locally and nationally by providing incentives and rewards.

Abalon said the enacted law encourages and promotes the participation of PWDs in mainstream sporting activities at all levels and ensure that children with disabilities have equal access with other children to play, recreation, leisure and sporting activities.(PNA) PGL/FGS/RBB/CBD/PJN
