Bicol bags 4 Hall of Fame awards for Gawad Kalasag 2015

LEGAZPI CITY, April 9 (PNA) -- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has informed the Bicol Regional DRRMC that the region won four out of five Hall of Fame Awards in the National Gawad Kalasag Search for 2015.

Office of Civil Defense Bicol Regional Director Bernardo R. Alejandro IV, Bicol RDRRMC head, on Saturday announced the winners as Legazpi City, Best CDRRMC (Independent/Component City); Barangay Oro Site, Legazpi City (Urban); Simon of Cyrene (Best Civil Society Organization) and D.Q. Liwag National High School, Vinzons, Camarines Norte, Best School (Public Rural).

The Hall of Fame Award is given to the local government unit (LGU)/organization/agency that had won three consecutive first places in their respective categories.

Meanwhile, the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital placed first for the Hospitals, Government National Category; the Moreno Integrated School, Daet, Camarines Norte placed 2nd for Public Schools, Urban Category; the Buraguis Day Care Center, Legazpi City placed 2nd for the Early Learning Center, Urban Category; and Chief Insp. Achilles M. Santiago, Bureau of Fire Protection, received the special award for Heroic Act, Individual.

For the previous years, the Bicol Region was also notable in the Gawad Kalasag Award, having won Hall of Fame awards by the PDRRMC Albay, MDRRMC Sto. Domingo, Child Sponsorship for Community Development Inc. in Legazpi City and MDCC Labo, Camarines Norte (now MDRRMC).

In addition, Gawad Kalasag awards were also received by the Daraga National High School and MDCC Calabanga, Camarines Sur.

“We, in the Office of Civil Defense 5, commend the great efforts of our awardees, most especially the leadership in the local government units and the respective agencies. Gawad Kalasag award is one way to showcase the best Disaster Risk Reduction and Management practices in the local areas and, at the same time, to boost resiliency in our region. I congratulate the awardees for taking a milestone for DRRM,” said Alejandro.

KALASAG stands for KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan and is the Philippines’ recognition scheme for various stakeholders that design and implement DRRM programs and projects to address vulnerabilities in order to cope with disasters.

Yearly, OCD and other NDRRMC members conduct a search nationwide to commend DRRM practices.

The 17th Gawad Kalasag awarding ceremony is tentatively scheduled on April 18.(PNA) RMA/FGS/RLM/CBD/PJN
