LEGAZPI CITY, March 4 (PNA) -- In connection with the celebration of the World Wild Life Day on Thursday, the Provincial Government of Albay (PGA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol regional office held a groundbreaking ceremony for the first Regional Wildlife Rescue Center (RWRC) located at the Albay Park and Wildlife in Barangay Bogtong in this city.
Governor Joey Sarte Salceda, DENR Bicol Regional Director Gilbert Gonzales and Mayor Noel Rosal led other guests during the occasion.
The project is covered by a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed by Salceda and Gonzales.
Under the MOA, the DENR will allot Php5 million for the center building that will be constructed while the PGA will manage the operation of the RWLRC.
Salceda said Albay was chosen as the site of the first RWRC because it is the only province that has a park and wildlife.
Aside from this, wild forest animals found by field personnel of the DENR Bicol are temporarily housed in the APWL before being returned to their original habitat.
Che Rebeta, former APWL head and now Albay provincial agriculturist, said the center will have two floors, with ground floor to be occupied by a clinic and temporary shelter of animals while the second floor will be the center's administrative office.
Reacting to suggestion that the center be made a dog pound area, Rebeta said it is not possible as dogs are domesticated while animals that will be housed in it are wildlife.
She said the Provincial Veterinary Services Office headed by Dr. Florencio Adornay has a dog pound project. (PNA) LAP/FGS/NIM/cbd
