Authorities catch 15 illegal fishers in Masbate

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 21 (PNA) -- Joint elements of various law enforcement units confiscated a fishing boat and arrested its 15 crewmen, including the skipper, while actually engaged in illegal fishing locally known as trawl at about 3:57 a.m. Friday within the seawater of Barangay Zapatos, Balud, Masbate.

Operatives of the Balud Municipal Police Station, Provincial Intelligence Bureau, Regional Special Operations Task Group-Masbate, Regional Maritime Unit 5 Task Force Dagat, 402nd Maritime Police Special Task Force and Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Masbate were conducting a seaborne patrol operation in the area when they intercepted a fishing boat marked F/B Gezel Kelvin owned by Glen Sumbilon and skippered by Renante B. Blances -- both residents of Panay, Capiz.

The apprehending units seized from the illegal fishers one fishing boat, a fishing net and 30 plastic “banyeras” (basins) containing assorted fish.

The arrested persons and the confiscated evidence are now under the custody of the Philippine National Police Maritime Group for filing of charges in violation of Republic Act No. 8550. (PNA) SCS/FGS/EMC/CBD/PJN
