Mayor's security cop hunted for gun ban, firing shots

CAMP GEN. SIMEON A. OLA, Legazpi City, Jan. 26 (PNA) -- A new police officer assigned as a bodyguard of Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal is in hot water after he hit a man with his service firearm and shot at but missed the victim's companion at about 10:20 p.m. Monday night along C. Imperial St,. Barangay 15, Ilawod here.

A police report identified the suspect as PO1 John Cyril Cortez, who was reportedly under the influence of liquor.

Cortez was identified as the one who pistol-whipped victim Jerome Buatis, 33, and shot at Lolito Senias, 33, but missed him.

Cortez is facing multiple cases for violation of the Commission on Elections gun ban.

Rosal said he will not tolerate such a police personnel assigned to him to be abusive and has to be disciplined.

A report reaching Police Senior Supt. Celso Arcueno, Albay provincial director, said Cortez was drunk when Buatis and Senias happened to pass by and with no reason at all, the new police officer drew his gun and hit Buatis who fell on the ground.

Out of fear, Senias ran away but Cortez fired at him and missed, hitting instead the gate of the house of Imelda Ranoco, who operates a boarding house.

The bullet went through the walls of the boarding but fortunately no occupant was hurt.

The witnesses recognized Cortez who has gone on hiding.

Police recovered empty shells of Cal. 9 mm believed to have come from the service firearm being used by the suspect.(PNA) FFC/FGS/EMC/CBD
