Masbate City employee shot dead; police see politics as motive

CAMP GEN. SIMEON A. OLA, Legazpi City, Jan. 23 (PNA) -- Two unidentified gunmen armed with M-16 armalite rifles gunned down a 44-year-old employee of the Masbate City government while on his way home at about 6:20 p.m. Friday at Crossing Nursery St., Purok 3, Barangay Nursery, Masbate City.

A police report said Elmer Sampaga, married, died on the spot.

Sampaga was aboard his motorcycle when the two armed men blocked his way and peppered his body with bullets in the full view of residents in the populous area.

Police recovered empty shells of bullets for M-16 rifle, .45-caliber pistol of Sampaga, which was still tucked in his waist, his motorcycle, cash and cellphone inside the pockets of his pants.

Investigators believe that the killing was politically motivated as the victim openly supported a local candidate.(PNA) RMA/FGS/EMC/CBD/pjn
