Local officials ready for national de-worming day
By Emmanuel P. Solis

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan. 22 (PNA) -- City officials are now bracing themselves for the nationwide de-worming activity of the Department of Health (DOH) on January 27.

In fact, the Legazpi City Health Office, in partnership with the DOH Bicol regional office and the Department of Education (DepEd), conducted a re-orientation seminar for the Legazpi City public elementary school teachers on Thursday at the AVP function hall here.

The activity is part of the preparation for the National School De-worming Day (NSDD) on January 27.

The NSDD is targeting all 5-12-year-old kindergarten to Grade 6 pupils enrolled in public elementary schools for de-worming in order to reduce the burden of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) infections or intestinal worm that can cause poor physical growth, poor intellectual development, impaired cognitive functions in children.

These infections can also result in anemia and malnutrition to the children.

Dr. Fulbert Gillego, city health officer, said his office has been conducting a de-worming activity every months of April and October for children below five years old as part of the nutrition program of the city.

Gillego said he will submit a proposal to Mayor Noel E. Rosal that every household should have its own toilet as one way of practicing proper sanitation in order to reduce malnutrition rate in the community.

Based on the data collated by the CHO, four out of 10 elementary pupils have worm infections that can result in anemia.

To prevent this kind of health problem, the CHO will encourage all barangay officials to inform the parents of all public and private elementary schools children and those who are not enrolled to participate in the mass de-worming activity.

Carolyn Dominguez, Nurse ll of DepEd Legazpi City Division, said the DepEd has already conducted an advocacy campaign as part of informing all the parents of the pupils aged 5 to 12 years old to involve their children in the mass de-worming activity as one way of making them healthy and productive.

Aside from de-worming activity, Dominguez said, the DepEd will also inform the parents of the importance of proper hygiene among their children by way of applying the 4Fs, which means they should become aware of the FOOD they eat, they should wear FEET slippers to prevent the germs from entering the body of the children, always wash their FINGERS and hands before and after eating and keep away all the FLIES from the surrounding.(PNA) FFC/FGS/EPS/cbd
