CAMP GEN. SIMEON A. OLA, Legazpi City, Jan. 19 (PNA) -- Two New People's Army (NPA) members were killed while another one was captured in an encounter with government forces at around 10:20 a.m. Monday in Barangay Gibgos in Caramoan town, Camarines Sur.
The troops, composed of a section or around 21 soldiers from the 83rd Infantry Battalion and the 91st Division Reconnaissance Company, were on combat operations when they encountered 14 NPA members.
This led to a fierce 15-minute firefight that also resulted in the recovery of three M16 rifles, one M653 carbine rifle, one M203 grenade launcher, three backpacks, three improvised explosive devices and anti-government documents.
No one was hurt among the soldiers.
Col. Claudio L. Yucot, 901st Infantry Brigade commander, has sent reinforcement to strategic locations for blocking and pursuit operations.
Yucot said combat operation will continue to pursue the rebels in order to maintain peace and order, especially with the upcoming national and local elections.
"We need bigger strides in our operations this year. And I am happy our units responded and our strategy yielded with a big blow to the rebels," said Southern Luzon Command Chief Lt. Gen. Ricardo R. Visaya.
"Our election preparations shall not be made as an excuse for us not to hit the NPAs. On the contrary, hitting them is a vital component of our election preparations," he said. (PNA) FFC/FGS/EMC/CBD
