By John Mark Escandor

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur, Nov. 23 (PNA) -- Philippine Army soldiers recovered an M16 rifle, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and a generator after an encounter with about 15 New People's Army (NPA) rebels at the boundary of barangays McArthur and Malambong in Monreal town in Ticao Island, Masbate at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday.

A report reaching Brig. Gen. Ferdinand Quidilla, 9th Infantry Division commander, said the Army men from the 9th Infantry Battalion headed by 1Lt. Artphil Flores were on a security patrol operation when they encountered the rebels.

No casualty was reported on the government side but the military elements were still verifying whether there were casualties on the side of the rebels who immediately escaped after minutes of firefight.

Government troops from the 9IB are now pursuing the rebels.

Quidilla ordered the intensification of patrol operations in places being frequented by the NPA members, especially where residents are complaining about the harassment and extortion being done by the communist dissidents. (PNA) LAP/FGS/JME/cbd/eds
