LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 13 (PNA) -- Residents of Barangay San Juan, Del Gallego, Camarines Sur will soon have their own bangus processing facility with a Php2.2 million funding from the the Department of Social Welfare and Development under its Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS) program.

This DSWD program seeks to help alleviate poverty through community-driven development.

The project involves the construction of a fish processing facility with a floor area of 180 square meters, which is expected to be completed this year.

It is designed to provide an alternative source of livelihood to the farming village, whose 75 out 100 DSWD’s family-beneficiaries are also Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries.

“Napagkaisahan po ng barangay na magkaroon nito dahil meron kaming 80 hectares na bangus fishpond na p'wede namin pagkakitaan araw-araw (The village folk decided to have this (fish processing facility) because we have an 80-hectare bangus fishpond from where we can get our daily income),” Maria Asila Cabangon, a resident, said.

Cabangon also added that the facility will employ women of the target household-beneficiaries to augment their daily income.

he residents of San Juan get poor income, especially after typhoons wherein their crops are destroyed.

As a result, they decided to focus on bangus production and proposed the construction of a fish processing facility to the Kalahi-CIDSS.

The local government unit of Del Gallego, DSWD, Department of Science and Technology and Department of Agrarian Reform forged a memorandum of agreement to support Barangay San Juan for its bangus processing center.

The DOST will provide the equipment and the DAR will provide the training to its beneficiaries.

“We would like to break the cycle of poverty with the support of the people to the national agencies’ programs,” DSWD Regional Director Arnel Garcia said.

The same village also constructed a farm-to-market road and a water system sub-projects through Kalahi-CIDSS, Garcia said.(PNA) CTB/FGS/CBD/SSC
