Two fishers lose both hands due to dynamite

CAMP GEN. SIMEON A. OLA, Legazpi City, July 23 (PNA) -- Two fishermen lost their two hands after the dynamite they were preparing for use in catching fish exploded in the waters off the villages of Viga and Tinopan in the island-municipality of Rapu-Rapu in Albay on Thursday morning.

Victims Wenifredo Ebuenga, 31, married, and Salvador Borejon 28, married, Barangay Morocborocan of the same town were rushed to the Sorsogon Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Sorsogon province is nearer to their place.

A police report said the incident happened at about 9 a.m. while the two victims were preparing the home-made explosive locally known as "bigas-bigas" when it exploded.

Other fishermen in the area rushed them to the hospital for treatment.

Ebuenga and Borejon also suffered injuries in their bodies.

Authorities said illegal fishing has been rampant in the area despite their efforts to curtail it. (PNA) RMA/FGS/EMC/CBD/rsm
