Albay joins world in Arbor Day celebration

LEGAZPI CITY, June 25 (PNA) -- The Provincial Government of Albay headed by Governor Joey Sarte Salceda joins the world in the celebration of the World Arbor Day Thursday.

The occasion is focused on the massive planting of seedlings in the entire province.

Former board member Arnold Embestro, head of the Environment and Natural Resources Group-Provincial Office, said the activity is in line with the all-out efforts of the province to lessen the impact of climate change.

Embestro said a special activity is being held at the schools in Barangays Bulusan, Bonbon and Familia Sagrada in Libon town with the full participation of students and their parents, who will plant pili seedlings.

Each planted seedling will be named after the student who will plant it.

In this connection, all field offices of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the six provinces of the Bicol Region will have similar activities. The World Arbor Day celebration is centered on the theme "We plant, We harvest". The celebation is also a part of the observance of Environment Month in June, with the DENR spearheading.

The World Arbor Day celebration in the country is based on Proclamation No. 643, series of 2004: Declaring every June 25 as Philippines Arbor Day and Proclamation No. 396, series of 2003: Declaring June 25, 2003 as Philippines Arbor Day.

Based on these proclamations, all government agencies are required to actively participated in the occasion, together with government-owned and -controlled corporations, private sector, schools, civil society organizations and the public in general.
