LEGAZPI CITY, May 12 (PNA) -- The Local Government of Ligao, together with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), gave 250 students summer jobs under the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES).
The program is mandated under Republic Act No. 9547, formally known as “An Act To Help Poor But Deserving Students Pursue Their Education By Encouraging Their Employment During Summer and Christmas Vacations through Incentives Granted to Employers, Allowing Them to Pay Only Sixty Per Centum of Their Salaries or Wages and The Forty Per Centum Through Education Vouchers To Be Paid By the Government...."
The SPES is open to students, incoming college or college-level, or drop-outs, aged 15-25.
Chosen students are given a salary of Php320 per day, and are expected to work during the regular work week schedule.
Students are delegated to either work with other employees in offices or to work in the city government’s seedling nursery.
Before the end of the program, the students will be assessed of their job performance.
According to Vicente N. Rebutiaco, Public Employment Service Office (PESO) manager, 60 percent of the students’ salaries are shouldered by the LGU-Ligao while 40 percent comes from DOLE.
“I actually enjoy the job, and it makes for good experience,” says Allysa Olaviaga, 17, and Jessica Joy Bariso, 19, both taking AB Economics at the Ligao Community College, adding that “Bonus na rin 'yung sweldo (The salary is already a bonus) !” CTB/FGS/OJT/CBD
