2 die, 1 seriously injured when Army truck bumps motorcycle

LEGAZPI CITY, May 5 (PNA) -– Two persons died while their companion was seriously injured when their motorcycle was hit by a KM-450 truck of the Philippine Army at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday along the highway at Purok 7, Barangay Benodegahan, Pioduran, Albay.

Dead on arrival at the Josefina B. Duran District Memorial Hospital were Gerry May Manzanilla, 39, married and driver of the motorcycle, and Edgar Melgar. 31, married and back rider, while seriously injured was their companion Dominic Niebres, 30, single – all residents of Barangay 2 of the same town.

A police report identified the suspect as Cpl. Ignacio Lepanggi, 32, married and assigned with 2nd Infantry Battalion, 9th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army based in Barangay Tula-Tula, Ligao City.

A police report said the victims were on board their motorcycle marked “for registration” and were running along the Pio Duran-Ligao City road when the KM-450 truck of the Philippine Army loaded with soldiers bound for Barangay Macalidong for an operation against New People’s Army rebels appeared from the opposite direction in a curved portion and hit their vehicle.

The soldiers immediately boarded the victims to their vehicle and rushed them to the hospital but Manzanilla and Melgar were dead on arrival.

The police are now holding Lepanggi in custody and preparing charges against him. (PNA) FFC/FGS/EMC/CBD/SSC
