LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 11 (PNA) -- The Province of Albay and the Municipality of Polangui received the Agri Pinoy Achiever Award from Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala during the annual recognition ceremony of the department for the agriculture sector at the 10th Avenue Plaza, Magsaysay Avenue, Naga City, Tuesday night.

Provincial Agriculture Service Officer Ernesto dela Torre said this is the second time that the Province of Albay got this award.

Dela Torre said the award to Albay is in recognition of its programs and projects for the agriculture sector.

He said Albay is aspiring for the Hall of Fame honor.

The provincial agriculturist said that despite the various natural calamities that hit the province like typhoons due to climate change, the province was able to maintain its rice production.

In fact, he said, the rice self-sufficiency level of Albay reached 93.7 percent in 2014, equivalent to 228,000 metric tons of rice production.

From the previous level of 4.0 MT rice production per hectare, the annual yield increased to 4.3 MT per hectare.

The province also hiked its production during the rainy season by 1.33 percent and 6.88 percent during summer.

Dela Torre said the province aims for a 98-100-percent rice self-sufficiency level up to 2016, especially if the weather will cooperate.

Polangui Mayor Cherilie Mella Sampal said her town has been undertaking programs and projects to increase their rice yield with the help of the DA, Provincial Government of Albay and other partner agencies.(PNA) FPV/FGS/NIM/CBD
