LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 16 (PNA) -- Officials of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC ), Philippine Air Force and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Saturday morning conducted an aerial monitoring of the activities of Mt. Mayon.

This, after the active volcano showed higher abnormal activities in the past few days, prompting the Phivolcs to raise Alert Level 2 on Friday afternoon.

OCD Bicol Director Raffy Alejandro said the group surveyed the southeast quadrant of Mayon, especially the area within the six-kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone and eight-kilometer-radius buffer zone where there are villagers residing.

Alejandro said he immediately advised ground authorities to warn residents of the possible danger.

Local government executives of Legazpi City and Daraga, Sto. Domingo and other towns affected by Mayon during eruptions immediately convened their respective local DRRMCs to prepare for contingencies.

Albay Governor Joey Salceda earlier directed city, municipal and barangay officials to be on guard in anticipation of possible Mt. Mayon volcano explosion.

Salceda also banned climbing in Mt. Mayon and ordered the suspension of the famous ATV trail beyond lava front, no orchid picking, no vegetable harvesting in the delineated 6-km-radius PDZ and no human activity near the perimeter of the PDZ. (PNA) CTB/FGS/EMC/CBD/rsm
