460 Albay elementary schools receive weighing scales
By Mike de la Rama

LEGAZPI CITY, July 10 (PNA) – The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) in the province of Albay will distribute 460 weighing scales in all public elementary schools this Thursday.

Yolanda Guanzon, Albay PSWDO officer, said the distribution of weighing scales is in support to Albay's Nutrition Program under "Operation Timbang," which aims to reduce malnutrition among children.

The commitment of Governor Joey Sarte Salceda, according to Guanzon, is to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), specifically on poverty and malnutrition reduction.

Aside from weighing scales, the provincial government of Albay also earlier donated feeding utensils in all public elementary schools province-wide.

“The provincial government allotted Php 5 million for the nutrition program, which includes giving awards to best in nutrition initiatives in schools, barangays and local government units,” Guanzon said.

“Health and nutrition is a concern that needs the attention of all sectors because it directly impacts on our education and economic systems,” she said.

In his visit here last week, Department of Education Secretary Armin Luistro lauded Salceda for his initiative in addressing malnutrition among children.

Luistro said that throughout the country, only Albay showed full support to the National Nutrition Program, having completed 100-percent distribution of weighing scales and feeding to all elementary pupils.

Through DepEd Order 43 s. 2011, the department is strengthening its school health and nutrition program, aligning it with other existing activities to come up with one seamless whole.

These initiatives are in line with the Education For All and the MDGs of improving education outcomes, reducing absenteeism and ensuring that school-aged children remain in school.

Luistro reiterated his call for the active participation of other government agencies, the local government units, non-government organizations and the private sector on preventive health care, poverty alleviation, hunger mitigation and health awareness.(PNA) CTB/FGS/MDR/CBD/
