NPA rebel killed in Albay encounter

LEGAZPI CITY, May 1 (PNA) -- A New People's Army (NPA) rebel was killed in an encounter with soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army in Purok 7, Barangay Matanglad, Pio Duran, Albay, at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

A police report identified the slain rebel as Vergelio Olavides.

The report said soldiers based in Barangay Tula-Tula, Ligao City, were patrolling in the area when they encountered an undetermined number of armed rebels, resulting in a 10-minute firefight.

The rebels then withdrew towards an unknown direction, leaving behind their dead companion and a 9mm-caliber pistol, ammunition, personal belongings and a barangay clearance bearing his name.

Olavides’ body is now in a funeral home waiting to be claimed by his relatives.

The PNA learned that all military personnel in Albay are on red alert due to the ongoing Balikatan Exercise 2014 where joint Philippine and United States soldiers are now constructing and rehabilitating school buildings and health centers. (PNA) JBP/FGS/EMC/CBD/UTB
