NPA commander arrested in Naga City

CAMP GEN. SIMEON A. OLA, Legazpi City, Feb. 10 (PNA) – An ranking official of the New People's Army (NPA) was arrested by combined elements of the military and police in a joint operation along the Diversion Road in Naga City at around about 3:00 a.m. Monday.

Chief Supt. Victor P. Deona, Police Regional Office 5 director, identified the rebel leader as Silvestre Layones Jr., alias Ka Eric/Ka Dexter, suspected leader of the Urbancom, Bicol Regional Party Committee, Communist Party of the Philippine/NPA and a native of Quezon Province.

Deona said Layones was caught on board a passenger bus bound for Naga for a meeting.

He said Layones was arrested on the strength of a warrant of arrest issued by Judge Frank Lobrigo, presiding judge of the Regional Trial Court Branch 3 in Legazpi City, for murder docketed as C.C. No. 7520.

Deona said authorities had earlier received information that the rebel commander was onboard the passenger bus to attend a meeting in Naga City.

Based on the information gathered, combined operatives of Regional Intelligence Unit 5, Military Intelligence Group 5, Regional Special Operations Group, 9th Infantry Battalion, Camarines Sur Provincial Public Safety Company, 902nd Infantry Brigade and 903rd Infantry Brigade immediately set up a checkpoint along the highway, leading to the arrest of the suspect, he said.

Deona said that seized from suspect Layones were a laptop, a cellphone, USB, Internet broadband, P215,000 cash and a bag that contained personal belongings.(PNA) CTB/FGS/EMC/CBD/
