Albay readies evacuation of residents in flood-prone areas

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 30 (PNA) -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) HAS ALERTED ALL MAYORS AND BARANGAY CHAIRMEN IN THE PROVINCE OF ALBAY TO PREPARE FOR POSSIBLE EVACUATION THIS SATURDAY OF RESIDENTS SITUATED IN FLOOD-PRONE AREAS.

THIS, AFTER RAINS SINCE FRIDAY AFTERNOON CONTINUE TO POUR, CAUSING FLOODING IN SOME PARTS OF THE PROVINCE, ESPECIALLY IN DOWNTOWN LEGAZPI CITY.

ALBAY GOVERNOR JOEY SALCEDA, PDRRMC CHAIRMAN, SAID TRUCKS FROM THE PHILIPPINE ARMY, PHILIPPINE NAVY AND OTHER DISASTER OPERATION TEAMS ARE NOW ON STAND-BY STATUS IN FRONT OF THE ALBAY PROVINCIAL EMERGENCY AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT OFFICE.

"STRICT MONITORING IN ALL FLOOD-PRONE AREAS IS IN EFFECT AND EVACUATION WILL COMMENCE IF HEAVY RAINS CONTINUE," SALCEDA SAID.

THE PDRRMC HAS ALSO ORDERED THE CANCELLATION OF CLASSES, INCLUDING THOSE IN THE MASTERAL, DOCTORAL AND POST-TERTIARY LEVELS.

SALCEDA ALSO STATED IN THE ADVISORY ISSUED SATURDAY THAT ALL INDIVIDUALS HAVING EXTRAORDINARY ACTIVITIES IN LEADING MALLS LOCATED IN LEGAZPI CITY ARE ADVISED TO GO HOME.

ACTIVITIES THAT REQUIRE MOVEMENT OF MORE THAN 10 PERSONS INTO AN ACTIVITY CENTERS LIKE OATHTAKING CEREMONY IN GUNOBATAN, ALBAY, ARE ALSO ORDERED DEFERRED. CTB/FGS/MDR/CBD/
